Ltleflrt tagged me because of course she did!
What is your favorite fic that you have written?
Oh, man, I don’t even know? I guess I want to say, Clicking into Place because it was the fic that started my descent into madness via the Mass Effect fandom. But I’m also partial to Happy Birthday, Commander Shepard 2015 because I got to play around with a lot of different people’s Shepards and, even though the fic is short, it took a ton of planning and organizing to give all of the characters equal ensemble “screen time,” as it were.
How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now?
Not a whole lot, to be honest. I’ve got an MEBB shorter fic, a fantastic idea for the DCBB, and another hilarious crack fic featuring Ianto and Joasakura’s Shepard, Vanya.
Do you prefer to write canon or AU?
I actually don’t prefer either one. I’ve been writing a load of AU’s recently, but that’s only because I’ve almost exclusively written canon before, and didn’t really have the courage to remove the characters from the universe. But I love it now, and love them both equally.
Is there a trope you haven’t tried that you really want to?
Not really? I’ve pretty much explored every avenue that appeals to me, including Omegaverse (which I was sort of meh about until I got going with it), and kink, and all sorts of things.
What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever received?
One of my professors once said, “always write with confidence. You can even write what you don’t know, as long as you can convince people you know it.” A lot of writers, and me included, sometimes chicken out of plot twists or character representations or situations we don’t feel completely knowledgeable about, and therefore end up telling watered down stories of what we originally intended. Writing what you want, more than what you know, can be a huge gate-opener for people stuck with writer’s block, self-doubt, etc. The internet is a vast place with plenty of scholarly resources for helping us research what we don’t know. There’s no reason to be afraid of our stories in this day and age, and realizing that boosted me into the word count stratosphere.
If you pick one of your fics to be filmed, which one would it be?
Burn Down the Sky. Didn’t even have to think about that. Mass Effect characters as firefighters. Come on.
Who is your favorite character to write besides Castiel or Dean (or the members of your usual pairing)?
In Supernatural: Sam or Bobby. In Mass Effect: Ashley or Zaeed. In Dragon Age: Isabela.
Do you use notes, worksheets, or outlines?
That depends. Often short scenes or dialogue exchanges will pop into my head, and I always write them down. Long fics get outlines as much as possible, and the shorter fics sometimes don’t get anything at all. Several of my oneshots were written in a single sitting and then edited and cleaned up a few days later.
Do you write from start to finish, or do you write the scenes out of order?
Most of the time I write from start to finish. However, when a specific scene or exchange pops into my head first, I’ll write that and then fill in the rest around it. That’s pretty rare, though. If I’m writing something longer and I get stuck, I’ll jump around at let my roadblock rest so I can come back to it later.
If you could write a sequel to any fic out there, not written by yourself, which fic would it be?
I literally have no idea. I wouldn’t want to make a sequel out of anything I’ve read recently, I can tell you that, but I’ve messed with people’s ideas before. I’ve added unrelated, and also indirect, content to ltleflrt’s Feels Like Home universe with permission, but that’s about it? Over all, I couldn’t ever imagine taking someone else’s work and expanding on it unless I was a ghost writer, so I don’t often think about that.
Talk about a comment or review that made your day?
Well my favorite comments are always, “GODDAMMIT JJ!” 😀 but the comment that really made my day, was back during Brain Camp. Zubanah is Italian, and asked if he could translate the series into Italian and post it back on AO3 with credit. I couldn’t even imagine the amount of work and love for my fic that it must have taken to do that, but it was incredible. I also adore the comments like, “so………… you’re writing more of this one, yes?”
