People don’t notice or often care about things that aren’t right in front of them. The war in Heaven was IN Heaven, and not something they were directly responsible for, so how could they know how serious something out of sight is? The Winchesters had a plenty to deal with on Earth as long as Heaven stayed in its corner, so it’s really not surprising at all they didn’t make it their problem. Heaven isn’t their jurisdiction and they were already overwhelmed on Earth.
That is true and Cas did try to keep them out of it for as much as he could. But he did try to explain that it was bad, but apart from little glimpses of compassion, they didn’t really listen to him or take Cas issues into consideration.
I mean even if it’s not their war and they aren’t involved in it, shouldn’t they at least care about Cas himself? (Or care about the potential danger of Apocalypse 2.0?) It’s not like they kept themselves from placing more troubles on Cas’ shoulders… And giving him hell when he wasn’t able to help or prioritized the battle in heaven.
I think I’m just still really hurt by Dean’s dismissal throughout the season. Sure, Dean was under a lot of stress and he was especially unwilling to listen to Cas’ explanations when he had just found out about Cas lying to them. Still… He was so mean. :C
I think with everything that happened, this was sort of the height of the Winchester selfishness. It was A LOT more than they signed up for, after all. But I totally agree. Dean was a downright dick. Castiel’s betrayal aside, Dean took his frustration out on him a lot before he even knew what the truth was, and he never handles this stuff well. It was too much.
None of that is an excuse to be a shithead to people he calls his family, but it was certainly in character.
And I also think that they DID care about Castiel, but a Heavenly war? Every time they saw that Castiel was still whole and fighting, they assumed he was okay because angels are the strongest beings they’ve ever encountered, and this is before they lose their wings, or Castiel loses his grace, so full understanding of how big and dangerous it is, is probably hard to process.
Still, I also found myself going, “what an ASSHOLE!” a lot to Dean that season.
