MShenko, 28. “Marry me?” (because I’ll never get sick of this prompt. EVER)

bioticshenanigans

This did not post properly the first time. It auto-replied privately! Sorry!

Shepard had practiced this a hundred times in his head. Run all the numbers. Every eventuality. The different scenarios. He knew how to do this. The best way to ask Kaidan to marry him. Down on one knee as tradition dictated. Telling him tenderly everything their relationship had meant to him and changed him. Cataloging all the things he loved about Kaidan and would keep loving ‘till death do they part.

He just had to wait for the perfect opportunity to give his big speech. He didn’t want to tip the major off, so it couldn’t be while they were out on shore leave or on a date. Such as they were these days during the war. No, it would have to blindside him. Shepard would start his speech and Kaidan wouldn’t have a clue what was going on. Then he’d been able to ask the big question.

So, there they were. Settled into the Captain’s Cabin, sipping okay-ish whiskey and talking about what was done and what still needed doing before their next mission. It was the perfect opening. The perfect evening.

He took down the rest of the drink and cleared his throat. “Kaidan,” he said.

Kaidan turned his head with a smile. “Yeah?”

“Marry me?” Oh, for fuck’s sake. Really? That was it? Commander Goddamn Foot In Mouth Shepard. Way to go.

But the reaction is exactly what he’d been hoping for. Kaidan wasn’t often surprised, but the look of it as it spread across his face was perfect. He opened his mouth and then shut it again.

Shepard was about to grin but then something unexpected happened. Tears sprang to Kaidan’s eyes and his face smoothed into the most warm and open joy that Shepard had ever seen on anyone. And it took his breath away.

“Yes, Shepard. I’ll marry you.”

This has too many obvious answers, so I’m going with something else. Sorry, I was still stuck with the game universe for this one!

“I thought you were dead.”

Run like hell. That’s what they had to do. Run like hell. It was the most basic of basic training lesson. When outnumbered, run like hell.

At least… that’s what the smart people did. Kaidan made it to a burned out prefab unit and ducked behind it, skidding into the dust. Then he popped the heat sink on his gun and peeked his face out from cover to assess the battlefield. Shepard was the first person he saw. It only took a moment for horror to squeeze around his heart.

He didn’t even have the time to yell out before the biotic field built around the commander and he blasted himself into the middle of a group of husks chaperoned by two brutes. No. NO, SHEPARD! DON’T DO THIS TO ME AGAIN!

A blinding flash. Concussive shockwave and too much dust to see through. “Shepard!” Kaidan yelled into his mic. Nothing. No answer. Not a sound except for the shrapnel settling.

Kaidan jumped from cover and sprinted the several yards to where the action had ended. Through the dust cloud he saw Shepard sprawled on his back, pieces of the enemies fanned out around him.

“Shepard! Come on, Shepard, answer me goddammit!”

A small groan. Then a breathless chuckle. Then laughter. Kaidan kicks him in the armored side. “I thought you were dead!” he raged. “Are you dead?”

“Yeah,” Shepard said, flicking the seal on his helmet and tossing it off. “Yeah, I am.”

“Good,” Kaidan answered. “Saves me the trouble of shooting you myself.” He turned his back and radioed the ship.

“I love you, too,” Shepard gasped with another chuckle.

Mshenko, 46. “Hey, have you seen the..? Oh.”

“Hey, Shepard, have you seen the..? Oh.”

Fish. There were fish everywhere. And water. Lots of it. All over the Captain’s Cabin.

“If you say a single word, I will kill you,” Shepard answered, voice strained.

Kaidan walked down the stairs and gingerly into the small puddles gathering around the tank. He peeked into two of his helmets. Jellyfish. Of course. Three of Shepard’s had the eels. “Did you remember that EDI drained the tank because of the crack she found when-”

“-kill you,” Shepard answered, scrambling for another towel and trying to stop a torrent of water from gushing out while the tank drained. Again. “Are you going to help me or not?”

Kaidan crossed his arms over his chest. “What, and save you from your own idiocy? Hell, no. You ruined my gear.”

“And the rest of this damn ship if I can’t get it to drain faster… oh, thank god.” The water level finally settled beneath the worst of the crack and stuck to dripping rather than pouring.

“Could you not resist buying fish for just one trip until the tank was fixed? I’ve been looking everywhere for my helmet.”

“So have I,” Shepard answered, fruitlessly brushing at the water on the front of his off-duty blues. “Thanks for the assist with that.”

Kaidan shook his head, though he couldn’t help the small smile that touched his scarred lips. “I’d read you the riot act, but we both know there’d be no point.”

“Not about my pets,” Shepard agreed, kissing the corner of Kaidan’s smile and calling down to the storage bay for more towels.

Shenko, 21

21. “We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?”

Goddamn Earth weather. What was the matter with this place? Every damn time he went out the door it was something there to torture him. Excessive heat, excessive cold, snow, rain, sleet. Give him a ship and the stars and shove this damn weather out the airlock. The mass relays couldn’t be fixed fast enough for his taste.

“Kaidan, come on, you’re lagging behind, solider!” he called over his shoulder as he ducked under an awning and flinched as lightning stabbed through the clouds and exploded with a roar above them. He hated thunder.

He turned to call out again, but stopped. Kaidan was there in the middle of the soaked sidewalk, face turned up to the downpour, rivulets of water streaming past his ears and the back of his head.

“What the hell are you doing?” Shepard yelled over the noise.

Without moving, Kaidan grinned. “It’s been too long. I’m feeling the rain.”

“Are you kidding me? We’re in the middle of a thunderstorm and you wanna stop and feel the rain?”

Kaidan shrugged and spread his hands wide to the deluge. “How else would I remember that we won?”

Number 3, Ianto/Kaidan — Firefighter AU. Because I love myself some ANGST

First of all, HOW DARE YOU

3. “Please, don’t leave.”

He always waited until Miranda was gone. She never stayed at the hospital, especially during the early days when Shepard was in a medically induced coma, too burned to be awake and take the pain. She couldn’t look at him without crying in anger and begging Anderson to retire him when he recovered. He’d had his close call and that was it. That was all he should have been able to have. Miranda wanted that.

But Kaidan got her permission to be added to the visitation list. She’d agreed with a small sort of relief in her eyes. One more person there was one visit less she could suck in and pretend it didn’t destroy her.

So Kaidan went through the ritual with deep breaths. Hospital gown, cap, gloves, mask. The works. The door is open to Shepard’s room. Always open. And it’s dark because what would it matter whether the lights were on or not?

Kaidan sat next to the bed and pretended he wasn’t just as destroyed as Miranda was. It was so hard to swallow, but never as much as when Shepard’s cold hand was closed in his. His vitals weren’t stabilizing as well as they’d hoped. Not out of the woods was what the doctors always said with pity in their eyes. Kaidan said nothing to them or anyone else except Shepard.

Just the one thing. He leaned close to Ianto’s ear and whispered, “please, don’t leave. Ianto. Don’t leave me.”

War, After (Feels Like Home Universe) – jupiter_james – Mass Effect [Archive of Our Own]

So, most of you following me probably know that ltleflrt wrote an INSANELY good Mass Effect MShenko AU called Feels Like Home. If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor and give it a look. Mechanic!Shepard and Drifter/Cop!Kaidan. It’s delicious.

Anyway, she listed some prompts, and I stole her Shepard, John Matthew, and her FLH universe and created an alternate meeting of JM and Kaidan. With her permission, of course.

In this AU, Shepard is wounded serving in Afghanistan, and Kaidan is the military surgeon who attends to him.

War, After (Feels Like Home Universe) – jupiter_james – Mass Effect [Archive of Our Own]

mshenko trucker AU

This one’s for you, joasakura! I really don’t know how to drabble.

“What
the hell?” Kaidan muttered, flashing the high beams on his big rig as he
chugged past a dim sign on the side of the pitch black, two lane highway.
“Where have I ended up?” He’d sort of lost track of time and mileage
about an hour ago watching the scenery outside the truck’s windshield to pass
the time, but it had been a steady nothing of flat land and pine trees.

The
sign said OMEGA and advertised, food, hotels, and a truck stop. Civilization.
Kaidan needed to stop for the night, anyway. He was almost up on scheduled
hours for the day and he didn’t fancy the fine he’d get from headquarters if he
hauled a shit ton of… what was driving this time? Cat litter? Whatever it
was, he wasn’t going to pay the fine for driving it over hours.

 The
exit came into sight five miles later and Kaidan pulled off onto the ramp with
a yawn. “I’m in bumblefuck nowhere,” he muttered to himself. But then
he spotted the brightly lit truck stop. It was large and had a diner attached.
Perfect. He parked and slid from the cab, stretching and making his way wearily
to the 24 hour diner.

 A
surprisingly amazing burger and fries later, Kaidan got a soda to go and made
his way back to his truck. His bunk would do for the night, even though there
was a motel next door. The truck stop had showers, so he could bathe and change
in the morning. He’d hardly gotten dirty sitting on his ass driving all day.

***

He
didn’t know how long he’d been asleep, but it definitely wasn’t enough when he
was woken by a banging on the cab door. He rubbed his bleary eyes. What the fuck?

 The
knocking came again. Oh, man. He knew what this was. A lot lizard. Really? In
East Jesus Illinois? With a frustrated groan, he sat up and pushed the thin comforter
down to the foot of his bunk. You’re barking
up the wrong tree, lady
, he thought as he pushed the cab door open. He
froze. A man?

“Hey,”
he guy said in a low, melodious tone. His blue eyes sparkled with mirth and he
looked fantastic in a tight black t-shirt and jeans that almost appeared to
have been painted on. “Want some company?”

Kaidan
had never been approached by a man before in a place like this. It couldn’t be
a good way to make money. He realized he’d been staring openly, and dumbly,
when the guy’s eyebrow arched and he said, “uh, habla Inglés?”

Kaidan
cleared his throat. “Oh, yeah. Yes. English. I’m Canadian, so…”
like that explained everything. “What are you doing?”

The
man grinned and laughed like he’d hit the jackpot moron. Which he might have
done. “What does it look like?”

“Are
you a…?” he didn’t want to be rude, but…

“A
lot lizard? Yes. Obviously. Why else would I be knocking on your door at two in
the morning? I scoped you at the diner earlier. You want it or not?”

That
was the million dollar question, wasn’t it? “How much?” he heard
himself asking. What the hell?!

The
man’s grin widened. “fifty for hand, a hundred for oral. I don’t do
anything else. Need to be able to walk out of here.”

“That
much?” Seriously, Kaidan? Stop while you’re ahead.

Unperturbed,
the man shrugged. “Not much in the way of man on man action out here. I’m
a rarity. Clean, too. Wanna see my card?”

“Your-?”
A medical card was pressed into his hands and he couldn’t help but glance at
it. John Shepard. 33 years old. No STDs as of two days ago. Really?
“Uh.” He glanced down and felt his dick twitch slightly. Well. It had been awhile. And this guy was hot.
Really, really hot. “Fifty,” he said before he could change his mind.

Shepard
swung up into the cab and crowded Kaidan against the other door and then
slammed the one he’d opened. His eyes were half-lidded. “You got it,”
he said in a voice that oozed sex. “I’ll take good care of you. Payment up
front.”

Kaidan
scrambled for his wallet and handed the crumbled bills over. Shepard took them
with a murmured thanks and slid them into his back pocket. “No kissing on
the mouth,” he said softly as he unbuttoned Kaidan’s fly.

His
hands. Oh, fuck, god, shit, anyone listening, his hands. It didn’t matter if he’d done this hundreds of times to
other men. Kaidan felt fit to bursting as Shepard dove into his boxers and
palmed Kaidan’s dick gently, testing the weight and response before pumping him
with sure strokes. Kaidan cursed and arched into the contact. Vaguely he
thought it was worth every fucking penny.

Shit,
he was so close so fast. Before he knew what he was doing, he undid Shepard’s
pants and thrust forward so that their dicks were resting close together.
Shepard made a small whine, but didn’t pull away. Rather, he bucked up into
Kaidan’s hand and threw his head back.

Kaidan
opened his eyes just in time to see Shepard’s jaw clench tightly. Then he came,
splashing them both with come. The slickness pulled Kaidan along presently. He
shouted and cursed and his whole body trembled.

***

He
wasn’t sure how much time had passed when he opened his eyes, but Shepard was
still there, pants done up and both of them cleaned off. His smile was slightly
sad.

“I
don’t give discounts just because you got me off, too,” he said.

“Wouldn’t
dream of it,” Kaidan said, slightly breathless still. “Thank you.
That was…”

Shepard
grimaced. “Weird,” he finished. “I’ve never actually… I mean,
I was talking a big game before… but I’m actually just… looking to get
away. Thought this was the quickest way. Make some fast cash and get out of
this dump, but I can’t stand to touch just anyone. You were hot, though, so I
thought if I could maybe get it done once, it wouldn’t be so strange later.
With other people.”

Kaidan
ran his hands through his messed up hair. “Why? I mean, why are you trying
to get out of here?”

Shepard
smiled wryly. “Look at this place. There’s nothing here. I got laid off.
Cutbacks. There’s nothing else out here. I need to go, but I’ve literally got
nothing but the fifty bucks you just gave me. Which I appreciate. And I’m
really sorry.”

Kaidan
worried his bottom lip between his teeth. He felt like he’d been drinking even
though he hadn’t had alcohol in months. “You could have just said
so,” he said after a moment.

“Excuse
me?”

“I
mean… There’s a big open road out there that gets pretty damn lonely. If you
wanted a ride…”

“You
would have?”

“Still
would,” Kaidan said quickly, before his brain had the chance to catch up
with his mouth. “You don’t even have to… um… earn your keep, as it
were. This load is going to New Orleans. How does that sound?”

Shepard’s
devastating grin grew. “Guess I’ll find out.”

Burn Down the Sky Ch. 32 [AO3]

The next chapter of my MShenko firefighter AU!

Ch. 32: A Senator’s house burns. Shepard opens up about his parents.

There’s no excuse for taking so long to publish the next chapter. I’m sorry for it. Too much bad stuff happening all at once again. Naturally. Anyway, I’m going to try my best to wrap this fic up in a decent amount of time now. 😀

Thank you so much for your continued patience and support! I look the kudos and comments all the time for inspiration!
